Mother and Son Bonding: Eureka Skydeck
On the weekend following the boys' tremendous trip, it was also time for some mother/son bonding, so Evan and I decided to spend a morning together viewing the city of Melbourne from the observation platform of the Eureka Skydeck. This viewing deck is 935 feet above the ground, 88 floors up, affording viewers the highest public vantage point in the Southern Hemisphere. The building itself has 92 stories in total, and is the world's tallest residential building. The glass on Eureka's top 10 levels is 24-carat gold plated. The lifts (that's Australian for elevators) travel at more than 9 metres per second, taking us to the 88th floor in less than 40 seconds! The observation deck has floor to ceiling windows, allowing us an awesome 360 degree panoramic view of Melbourne. Numerous viewfinders around the Skydeck pinpoint the many different historical and key cultural landmarks of Melbourne, like the Shrine of Remembrance in the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Melbourne Aquarium, the Arts Centre complex, and the Flemington Race Course which is close to where our home is located! Wowed already? There is more! Once up there, Evan and I were thrilled with an added "The Edge" experience, which is a glass cube that projects three metres out of the building with a clear glass floor once you are inside! We could lie right down on the glass and watch the miniscule world below. How cool is that?
