April 29-May 2: 2010 Pacific Rim Championships

The city of Melbourne played host to the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships from April 29 - May 2. The championships were for athletes from countries bordering the Pacific Ocean in the sport of artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline. The trampoline and rhythmic gymnastics competitions were held at an arena close to our place. At the individual finals, two Canadians won gold in trampoline. Alas, in rhythmic gymnastics, Canada was not so lucky and Russian athletes were the top award winners. Sadly I was not granted sanction from Canada to act as an official judge at the table. Instead, Gymnastics Australia invited me to serve as a line judge for the four-day competition. There were both individual and group competitions in rhythmic gymnastics. Athletes hailed from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Korea, China and Russia. It was a wonderful competition! It gave me a chance to see some first-class gymnasts with fabulous routines using all the apparatus - the rope, hoop,

ball, clubs or ribbon.

I was able to meet some international judges and reconnect with judges, coaches and gymnasts that I already knew from Canada. It was a great chance to meet up with judges from Australia and New Zealand that I hope to see at other future rhythmic gymnastics competitions this year. Deanna's former rhythmic gymnastics coach now works in New Zealand, and she brought her group to compete. We had met her earlier this year when we first visited New Zealand, and now it was great to see her again. I was happy that her group came first in their category. It certainly brought back many fond memories of the times we spent with Deanna and her in the gym!
