Gretna: Tracing My Roots in Tasmania

Travelling to Hobart on April 2, Rick became very excited upon discovering that the town of Gretna was en route! Here was his chance to trace his roots in Tasmania! Excitement grew until there it was - his hometown of Gretna!

Of course he had to stop and visit. He was not disappointed. No stone went unturned in an effort to locate all the familiar sights of his childhood, as well as some unique ones also!

There was the Gretna Butcher Shop, the Gretna Green Hotel (which was always strictly forbidden to enter as a child and so was off limits on this occasion also),
the Gretna General Store and Post Office, and the Gretna Fire Station . There even was a World War I memorial which was going to have a parade on the upcoming Anzac Day (like Remembrance Day in Canada). Of course this was reminiscent of the historical Mennonite cairn in southern Manitoba, only that one was more pacifistic!
Rick also thinks that he spied the old gnarled "owl tree", but which of the two it was remained a mystery to him!

And last of all - my, does my heart stop! - he spotted the “Heimat” (homeland) Chalet – his old homestead! In Rick's opinion, the picturesque scenery was almost equal to the real thing in Manitoba! Those of you from Gretna in Canada will have to decide for yourself!

In truth, it was an exciting diversion and Rick was thrilled – this little excursion made his day! For what more could one ask?
